Sunset Park Materials Recovery Facility

472 2nd Ave. Brooklyn New York United States Phone: +1 347 429 8097

About This Location

New York City selected the 29th Street Pier in the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, as the location for a new state-of-the-art recycling facility to be built and operated by Sims Municipal Recycling. The facility opened in December 2013 and processes the majority of New York City’s commingled curbside material.

Situated on an 11-acre pier, the Sunset Park MRF is the largest and most sophisticated plant for commingled residential recyclables in North America.

Recycling Education Center (REC)

SMR built and operates a Recycling Education Center (REC) at its Sunset Park MRF. This facility hosts more than 8,000 visitors a year, consisting primarily of schools groups, but also adults, graduate classes and professional organizations. The REC spans includes interactive displays and is connected to the recycling facility with a bridge so visitors can witness first-hand how metal, glass, and plastic are sorted.

More Location Details

aerial view sims municipal recycling brooklynOpened in December 2013. SMR managed construction of a new 11-acre recycling center on the Brooklyn waterfront from 2010 to 2013. SMR worked with geotechnical engineers to develop structural fill blends using “mole rock” from NYC tunneling projects mixed with recycled glass aggregate (RGA). More than 5,000 tons of RGA were blended with 20,000 tons of mole rock and used to elevate sections of the site by 4 feet, thereby protecting buildings and equipment against sea level rise and storm surges.

The recycling facility supports approximately 85 new permanent jobs at all skill levels–hiring from the local community is a priority.

The REC includes a theater, lunch space, and outdoor patio with views of the NYC skyline.

The new recycling facility utilizes sustainable building practices. “Green” design includes: natural lighting and renewable energy production; on-site storm water treatment; water efficient landscaping; and the use of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel in on-site equipment. Processing operations are enclosed to avoid the impact of dust, odors or litter on the surrounding area.

The New York City curbside recycling program relies on SMR’s network of waterfront facilities and in-harbor barge fleet to transport metal, glass and plastic between facilities, thereby minimizing truck traffic throughout Brooklyn and the rest of the City. In addition to reducing the travel distances of DSNY collection trucks, the 29th Street Pier makes extensive use of barges and waterways for both inbound and outbound recyclables.
